The Edison Legacy

A Legacy Born from Innovation

Sag Harbor, New York was a seaport community built on the whaling industry. As that era ended, manufacturing took hold, shifting Sag Harbor into an industrial hub. It was here that Charles Edison chose to build something lasting.

Charles Edison, son of inventor Thomas Alva Edison, was a distinguished public figure and industrialist, serving as President of Thomas A. Edison, Inc., Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Navy, and 42nd Governor of New Jersey before founding Sag Harbor Industries in 1946.

From its earliest days producing small electric coils for automobile clocks and appliances, to supporting the NYSE's first automatic quotation board, airline reservation systems, GE's space center, satellite communications equipment, and today's aerospace and military OEM clients. Sag Harbor Industries has grown by staying focused: American-made, custom-wound, and built to spec.

A localized manufacturer can be more productive than a large one. That belief guided Charles Edison in 1946, and it guides us still.

Eight Decades of Growth

Milestones

1890–1946
Charles Edison

Born August 3, 1890, son of inventor Thomas Alva Edison. In 1927 he became President of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. He went on to serve as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy (1937), Secretary of the U.S. Navy (1940), and 42nd Governor of New Jersey (1941–1944). In 1946, he channeled that experience into founding Sag Harbor Industries in Sag Harbor, New York.

1946
The Founding

Sag Harbor, a seaport community once built on the whaling industry, became an industrial hub as manufacturing took hold. In 1946, Charles Edison establishes Sag Harbor Industries. Early work focused on small electric coils for automobile clocks and appliances. Thomas A. Edison, Inc. became an early customer, purchasing custom coils in large quantities.

1949
Expansion and New Partnerships

The company expands its building to meet growing demand. Charles partners with Paul Scheerer and Stuart Miller to scale operations. New customers include Jaeger-LeCoultre and Lux Products Corporation.

1950
NYSE and Aviation

Teleregister engineers the world's first automatic stock quotation board for the New York Stock Exchange using Sag Harbor custom electric coils. The collaboration extends to a new airline reservation system, placing Sag Harbor components at the center of American commerce and aviation.

1960s-80s
Aerospace, Broadcasting, and GE

As fluid power, aerospace, and computer technology industries rose, Sag Harbor grew with them. Tudor and Gotham football game scoring systems ran on Sag Harbor custom coils. A partnership with General Electric supported coil production for the GE Space Center and GE's computer department. COM DEV International Ltd. relied on Sag Harbor for satellite and spacecraft communications equipment.
